The elephant, the largest of the land-dwelling animals, is divided into two by the names of “Asian (or Indian) elephant” (Elaphas maximus) and “African elephant” (Loxodonta africana). The African elephant is larger than the Asian elephant and weighs an average of 7.5 tons, 3-4 m. it is in height; while the Asian elephant weighs 5 tons, 2.5-3 m. it is in height.
Elephants, which can live up to seventy to eighty years, are very fast and mobile animals, despite the size of their trunks. The nasal part of the head, which is connected to the body with a short and thick neck, has turned into a hose consisting of cartilage, adele and nerve; the elephant can take food and water to its mouth with this, as well as protect itself, it can easily uproot even a tree and pick up an object the thickness of a pin from the ground. He also uses his two upper incisors on both sides of his mouth, whose weights are 35-40 kilograms, and whose tips are directed upwards, as a weapon.
Elephants eyes are small compared to his big body, his voice is relatively thin and high-pitched; it resembles the sound of a trumpet. The elephant has only knuckles on the shoulders and hips. For this reason, he can sleep either standing or leaning on a floor; if he falls on his side, he does not confirm it on his own and can only get up with the help of his fellow men. Elephants roam in separate herds consisting of males and females. The gestation period of the female elephant is close to two years and she gives birth every seven years; about 100 kg. in weight, and 1 m. in order for the cub, which is at a height, not to fall hard to the ground, the birth is carried out at the water’s edge. The elephant, of course, has no enemies; only he is afraid of the little forest mouse, as it gets inside his ear and causes a lot of discomfort.
According to historical records, elephants were often caught by setting traps. The most common form of this was to open a steep pit on three sides, where only an elephant could fit, and allow the animal to enter here by a sloping path, on which his favorite fruits and greens were sprinkled. The elephant that entered the pit could not come back from there and could not move. Then hunters dressed in bright red, blue and yellow dresses would come and beat the animal with long sticks, then someone in a white dress would come and chase them, giving the elephant food and drink, and sit next to him and try to warm him up.
This treatment continued until the man in white touched the elephant or even rode on his back, after which the ground in front of the pit was dug and the animal was taken out. The taming of the elephant has been carried out only in India. The Asian elephant is intelligent, patient, well-behaved and loyal to its owner, but it is also vindictive in dangerous dimensions, while the African elephant is completely wild in nature and cannot be tamed even today.
