Gimli is the son of Gloin, one of the dwarves who accompanied Bilbo on his quest for the Lonely Mountain. He is also related to Dain II Ironfoot by 3 navels. Although he is of noble blood, he is not in a position to represent the kingdom. Born in the Blue Mountains in the year 2876 of the Third Age, Gimli settled in Erebor in 2941 after the death of the Dragon Smaug. Gimli’s father, Glóin, is one of the companions of the dwarf Tharin and later of Thorin.
