There is a lot of archaeological evidence that says tattoos were made in Egypt between 4000 BC. and 2000 BC, as well as being tattooed by indigenous peoples of Polynesia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Zealand (Maori) in rituals associated with religion.
The Ainu, an indigenous people of northern Japan, traditionally had face tattoos, as did the Austro-Asians. Today, the tradition of using face tattoos can be found in various ethnic groups around the world, including the Berbers of North Africa, the Yoruba, Fula and Hausa of Nigeria, and the Maori of New Zealand.
