Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
In fact, the dates of Ramadan are different every year. This is because Islamic fundamentals use a calendar based on the cycles of the moon. Most Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset.
Fasting enables Muslims to dedicate themselves to their faith. It teaches self-discipline, away from worldliness. It is believed that not eating while others are eating is beneficial for improving self-discipline.
However, children, pregnant women, the elderly, the sick and travelers do not fast. During Ramadan, a meal is eaten once just before sunrise (known as sahur) and just after sunset (known as iftar). If desired, food can be eaten from evening to morning.
