In some cases, water vapor in the air condenses directly into tiny ice crystals to form snowflakes, giving them the appearance of hexagonal prisms.

But these crystals can attract colder water droplets from the air.

Individually formed crystals turn into other snowflakes in more complex shapes, with the appearance of branched shoots from their corners.

Each snowflake has a different shape from the others, so no two are alike.
