Ash Ketchum is an enthusiastic kid who loves Pokémon and battles. His great passion for Pokémon led him to set himself the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master, the highest level of Pokémon training, so he embarks on a journey to seek that title.

When Ash turns 10, he gets the opportunity to get a starting Pokémon from Professor Oak. Unfortunately, he fell asleep the night before the first day of his trip, and by the time he reached the professor’s lab, all of the starting Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle) had already been selected by other trainers. His starting Pokémon is a stubborn Pikachu who doesn’t like to get into Pokéball/Poké Ball.

During their walk in the forest, Ash and Pikachu are attacked by a wild pack of Spearows due to threats and failed attempts to catch a Pokémon. Ash decides to dive into a river to avoid being seen to escape the flying Pokémon. Across the river, a girl named Misty (who later chases after Ash allegedly paid for her bike on her ride) catches the aquatic Pokémon with her stick while accidentally catching Ash and a badly injured Pikachu who has sunk into the water.

Seeing that Spearow’s pack is still after them, Ash takes Misty’s bike to the Pokémon Center to heal Pikachu, but Ash, unable to escape despite riding a bike, puts himself in danger to defend Pikachu.

Thanks to these displays of respect and unconditional devotion to his Pokémon, Pikachu came to appreciate Ash and friendships were formed. A short time later at the Pokémon Center, Team Rocket constantly tries to capture the Pokémon for the organization’s president, Giovanni, in a clash with Team Rocket where it is shown that Pikachu’s great strength has outstripped the power of its evolution.

Arriving in Silver City after crossing the Green Forest, Ash decides to join the Pokémon League. To begin his journey to collect gym medals in the Kanto region, Brock is the first gym leader invited by Ash to an official battle. However, unable to beat Brock, Ash decides to go to another gym. Shortly after, Brock presents Ash with his first Gym Badge and leaves the Gym Leader position to travel with Ash and fulfill his dream of becoming a Pokémon Breeder.

Later that day, Ash, accompanied by Misty and Brock, wanders Kanto collecting Gym Badges. After receiving all 8 medals from the Kanto gyms, Ash enters the Pokémon League tournament, where he is among the 16 best coaches in the competition.
