In the 7th century, Pope IV. Boniface moved All Saints’ Day, celebrated on 13 May, to 1 November, possibly to replace the pagan festival. The eve of All Saints’ Day (October 31) was considered sacred and hence the name Halloween in Western languages. In the late Middle Ages, secular celebrations fused with the Christian holiday.
