The trade in cups from the horn, supposedly removing poison from food, flourished, it was believed that the poisonous liquid in it boiled. One European miniature of the FIFTEENth century depicts Saint Benedict throwing away a piece of bread served to him: a reader of that time, seeing a unicorn next to the saint, could understand that the bread was poisoned, and the saint, with the help of God, guessed it. The unicorn horn allegedly fogged up as it approached the poison. In the Renaissance, a unicorn figurine was placed above pharmacies.
