Pandas are really cool bears that love to eat bamboo, munching on 10 to 15kg of it every day! But making panda families is super tricky. Pandas like to be alone and only have a very short time each year when they can have baby pandas.
Sometimes, if a panda mom has two babies, she has to choose the stronger one to take care of, because she wants to make sure her baby gets all the love and attention it needs. There are about 1,800 pandas living in the wild in China, and even though they look big and cuddly, they’re actually great at climbing trees thanks to their strong claws.
Baby pandas are born super tiny, blind, and without any fur or teeth. After a while, they grow their famous black and white fur. A long time ago, pandas used to eat meat, but now they eat bamboo, which is tough for their tummy to digest, so they have to eat a lot of it.
One big challenge for pandas is that their homes in the wild are getting split up by things like farms, making it hard for them to find each other. But don’t worry, it’s illegal to hurt pandas in China, and sometimes, pandas even get to travel to zoos around the world, helping us learn more about them and how to keep them safe.
