In 1990, when Nintendo and Sega were the main competitors in the console market, Sega was looking for a mascot that would replace previous mascot Alex Kidd, had good personality and was capable of dealing with the famous plumber Mario, mascot of Nintendo since 1985. To this end, Naoto Ōshima developed the blue hedgehog, then known by the codename “M. Needlemouse” (Needlemouse is a literal translation of Hedgehog into Japanese), Sega decided to choose Sonic as Sega’s new mascot.
